Our world is still deeply rooted in colonialism. The power and exploitative mechanisms inherent in it are perpetuated by AI. The Global South pays the price for digitalization so that the Global North can maximize profits and maintain and strengthen power structures and relations of domination. “Digital colonialism” is a concept developed by, among others, Renata Avila Pinto from Guatemala and Neema Iyer from “Pollicy”—a civil society technology organization based in Uganda. The workshop will begin with an introductory presentation on the topic. This will address the exploitative labor of AI workers in the Global South and the immense energy and water consumption of AI. In the second part, we will form small groups for in-depth exploration and mutual exchange of knowledge on this topic, culminating in a collaborative discussion on networking and future approaches to this issue.
