Finding meaning in life

Workshop

Viktor E. Frankl, doctor, philosopher, and founder of the Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy, logotherapy, and existential analysis, emphasizes that every human being is most interested in finding meaning in their life. He concluded that we live in an age of existential frustration. Despite all the meaninglessness and horror in the world, people trust that life as a whole is meaningful. Their deepest desire is the desire for meaning in life, that is, they want to find meaning in every situation in their lives. Humans therefore strive primarily to realize values and thereby fill their own lives with meaning. In the Frankl approach, value realization is possible in three ways: (1) by creating something – shaping the world in some way, (2) by experiencing something – accepting the world into ourselves, (3) by suffering something – which means accepting our fate, our cross to bear, and the unchangeable. After finding and experiencing creative and experiential values, we arrive at the values that shape our lives. In the workshop, after introducing the topic, we will start with using art therapy methods and taste Frankl's triad in this unique way of exploring values.
